Pioneer School District No. 402 Calendar 2026-2027

Pioneer School District grew from four rural schoolhouse communities east of Shelton. Before the district opened in 1952, children attended the school nearest Oakland Bay, Agate, Harstine Island or Grant. Those areas now send students toward one shared K–8 system in the South Puget Sound countryside, bringing several older local school identities into the same Pioneer community.

Approximately seven hundred students use Pioneer Elementary and Pioneer Middle School across three district buildings. The middle school was newly built and the elementary school expanded and remodeled in 2017, giving the consolidated district a modern common center. Buses still gather children from wooded roads and shoreline communities, then meals, libraries, performances and school activities bring those routes together. Breakfast and lunch are available at no cost to students, with fresh fruits and vegetables and scratch cooking included in the food program.

Pioneer also maintains practical supports for families whose circumstances differ across a broad rural area. District staff can connect eligible students with preschool, English-language learning, Title I, highly capable and special-education services. Counselors and liaisons also assist with school supplies, clothing, records, transportation and medical, dental or mental-health referrals when families need them.

Pioneer's own program stops after eighth grade. Students then enter high school in another district, where courses, athletics and graduation requirements belong to the receiving school. That transition is the first full break from a system created by consolidating four scattered schoolhouses and still bringing those communities together each morning.
