65. Federal Way Public Schools
Federal Way Public Schools serves a compact but highly varied part of South King County. Its thirty-five-square-mile boundary includes Federal Way and portions of Des Moines, Auburn, Kent and unincorporated communities. Twenty elementary schools, three K–8 schools and six middle schools lead into four comprehensive high schools—Decatur, Federal Way, Thomas Jefferson and Todd Beamer—along with several specialized schools.
The municipal lines are easy to cross without noticing; the school communities are held together by one of Washington’s most culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Dual-language classrooms are designed to develop bilingualism and biliteracy, and multilingual services help students enter academic work while maintaining connections with their home languages and cultures. The district’s four high schools support different academic and activity traditions, with programs ranging from advanced coursework and the Cambridge pathway to athletics, performing arts and student leadership.
Career exploration begins in middle school through hands-on projects and expands into agriculture, business, health sciences, skilled and technical fields, family and consumer sciences and STEM. CTE dual-credit courses connect high-school work with Green River College, Highline College, Renton Technical College and other partners, while the Puget Sound Skills Center and pre-apprenticeship opportunities take students into more concentrated training.
Federal Way’s scale is large enough to provide many routes, yet its defining educational task is personal: helping families from many languages, cities and migration histories find a clear place inside the same public-school network.
