Tacoma Public Schools Calendar 2026-2027

Tacoma students can use the city itself as part of the school day. Neighborhood schools anchor most families, while SOTA, SAMI and IDEA organize project-based learning through downtown arts spaces, Point Defiance Park, the zoo and aquarium, design studios and other public institutions. Students enter those citywide schools through an application and lottery, and may remain connected to athletics at their resident high school.

The district’s urban scale also requires relationships that cross campuses. International migration, refugee resettlement and more than one hundred family languages make interpretation and newcomer support part of daily work. Native Education serves students across schools on the ancestral lands of the Puyallup Tribe, connecting academic support with cultural knowledge and ongoing tribal relationships.

Jobs 253 adds paid or credit-bearing workplace experience with Tacoma employers. Students practice professional habits, receive mentoring and can earn both elective credit and a completion stipend. The program uses the city’s businesses and public organizations as another learning network.

A new waterfront option is scheduled to open in fall 2026. Maritime|253 is a regional half-day skills center operated with the Port of Tacoma, mainly for students in grades eleven and twelve who keep their home-high-school enrollment. Its maritime technology, logistics, sustainability and advanced-manufacturing pathways will add another location to a district already spread across neighborhoods, parks, cultural institutions and workplaces. At the August 8 research date, enrollment was open and the building was preparing for its first full school year.
