South Whidbey School District Calendar 2027-2028

South Whidbey School District serves the island communities around Langley, Freeland and Clinton. Children begin at South Whidbey Elementary, an inclusive transitional-kindergarten-through-fifth-grade school, then move into the district’s middle and high-school programs. Ferries, wooded roads and small town centers shape family travel, while one local secondary route keeps students on the south end of the island through graduation.

Farm, Forest and Sea learning gives the elementary years a strong connection to place. Every ITK–5 student participates in a weekly farm rotation, and fifth-graders add cooking experiences using food they have helped grow. Forest study, native plants, salmon in the classroom, gray-whale learning, Camp Casey and other Salish Sea experiences connect science with stewardship. Community farms, food-bank gardens, state parks and marine organizations serve as regular partners.

Alternative programs add another public-school route for families seeking a different balance of home, campus and outdoor learning. The island’s small population does not limit students to a narrow classroom world; community experts and regional organizations repeatedly enter the curriculum. A child who plants peas in kindergarten can later study marine systems, food production and island ecology with an increasingly mature sense of responsibility for the same place.
