163. Peninsula School District

Peninsula School District serves two related geographies west of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Gig Harbor has denser suburban neighborhoods and a town center; the Key Peninsula stretches through smaller waterfront and rural communities. Ten elementary schools feed four middle schools, then most students continue to Gig Harbor or Peninsula High School. Henderson Bay High School provides a smaller secondary route. The districtwide structure gradually brings children from coves, wooded roads and newer housing into shared high-school communities.

Military families are a visible part of that movement. As a Purple Star district, Peninsula trains staff to support students arriving or leaving because of service assignments and follows interstate-compact protections during enrollment and course placement. Community partnerships also vary by location: PenMet Parks shares recreation resources, Hands On Art reaches every elementary school, and the Red Barn Youth Center gives Key Peninsula teenagers a local gathering place beyond the school day.

Advanced and technical work is distributed across the district, which matters when a specialized sequence is concentrated at one campus. Students may travel for a program such as IB, Cambridge, drone certification or construction training while continuing to belong to Gig Harbor or Peninsula High School. Running Start and College in the High School add two college-credit routes, one based at a college and one built into the high-school day. The practical question is often how a student reaches a districtwide opportunity while keeping activities and graduation planning anchored at the home school.

A new Parent Partnership Program begins in fall 2026 for elementary families using home-based instruction. It adds another way to remain connected to Peninsula teachers and enrichment, while the ordinary district continues to be shaped by the daily distance between Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula.
