Lopez Island School District Calendar 2026-2027

Lopez Island School District operates across an island landscape where travel can determine how long a student remains in a local school. The main Lopez campus carries children from the elementary years through high-school graduation, allowing most island families to stay within one K–12 community. Decatur School serves kindergarten through eighth grade on Decatur Island, preserving nearby public education for a much smaller population. Its students need a new high-school arrangement after eighth grade because the island school ends there.

Learning on Lopez is closely connected to place. The district’s farm-to-school and garden work brings food production, nutrition and environmental study into the school day, while the cafeteria uses local ingredients and student-grown produce when possible. Arts, athletics and community performances matter in a setting where the school is one of the island’s main gathering places. Older students also use travel, field experiences and partnerships to reach opportunities beyond what can be offered on a small island campus.

The Parent Partner Program adds a third route. Families conduct substantial learning at home while remaining enrolled through district plans, teacher contact and public-school accountability. A Lopez student can experience the district as a full K–12 campus, a remote K–8 island school or a family-partnership program. Ferries, boats and home learning change the daily geography, yet all three routes belong to the same island-based public system.
