Bainbridge Island School District Calendar 2026-2027

Bainbridge Island schools operate in a place where Coast Salish history and the legacy of Japanese American exclusion remain visible in the landscape. Since Time Immemorial, relationships with the Suquamish people and local cultural partners connect students with tribal sovereignty and regional history. The Japanese American Exclusion Memorial and island family histories give another difficult national story a concrete local setting.

The regular school path gradually turns several elementary communities into one islandwide cohort. Blakely, Ordway and x̌alilc elementary schools serve kindergarten through fourth grade. Students then meet at Sonoji Sakai Intermediate for grades five and six, continue to Woodward Middle for grades seven and eight, and enter Bainbridge High School in ninth grade. By the middle years, the peer group extends across the island and far beyond each child’s original elementary area.

Bainbridge High combines advanced coursework, arts, athletics, career and technical education, Running Start and access to West Sound Technical Skills Center. Foundations, parent organizations and community partners add resources across the district, while the island’s shoreline, parks and civic institutions create natural settings for environmental and public-history work.

Commodore Options School broadens the system through Odyssey, MOSAIC and Eagle Harbor High, serving families seeking multiage, home-partnership or smaller secondary settings. Those programs create different school weeks and communities. Most families still share the island’s distinctive K–4, 5–6, 7–8 and 9–12 progression, carrying local history and an increasingly unified peer group from childhood into graduation.
