San Juan Island School District Calendar 2026-2027

Most San Juan Island students follow a compact Friday Harbor route through elementary, middle and high school. The island setting still expands the classroom far beyond those buildings. A long partnership with the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories gives K–12 students access to marine scientists, field methods and the waters around the archipelago. Local foundations and the island park and recreation district also help sustain arts, athletics and enrichment that a small district could not finance through enrollment alone.

Two additional schools reveal how widely the district defines access. Stuart Island School is a remote-and-necessary K–8 one-room school about fourteen miles from Friday Harbor, in a community without public transportation or standard utilities. Its multiage classroom uses the island, community library and local knowledge as everyday resources. Griffin Bay School provides K–12 remote and hybrid learning through written plans, regular teacher contact and options to use selected Friday Harbor High classes or activities.

A student’s version of the district can begin with a daily trip into Friday Harbor, a one-room school on Stuart Island or a flexible plan completed largely at home. Marine science, island travel and community support connect those settings even though the weekly routines are very different.
