Griffin School District Calendar 2026-2027

Griffin School District is a one-campus preschool-through-eighth-grade system west of Olympia, serving the Steamboat Island peninsula and surrounding rural neighborhoods. Since its establishment in 1927, the school has become a community center as much as an educational institution. Families encounter the same campus through early learning, elementary years, middle-grade activities, performances and sports, creating long relationships among students, staff and local organizations.

The district’s connection to place includes the Squaxin Island Tribe, whose ancestral territory encompasses South Puget Sound. Tribal members have joined the school for Billy Frank Jr. Day through drumming, dance and stories, linking local history with environmental stewardship and contemporary community life. Music also carries beyond the K–8 campus: Griffin students build skills that can continue into the Capital High School program, and local foundations and community partners support activities and scholarships.

Griffin received the 2026 State Superintendent’s Award for Educational Excellence for Achievement, recognition that gives substance to the district’s strong academic reputation. The transition after eighth grade still changes the student’s daily world, with most continuing to Capital High School in Olympia. By then, however, the student has spent nine years in a school shaped by one close community, a visible relationship with the Squaxin people and sustained attention to academics, music, service and belonging.
