48. Dayton School District No. 2
A Dayton school greenhouse plant sale can bring students, agricultural coursework and local residents together in one transaction. FFA members grow and market plants, developing cultivation, business and communication skills while serving their Columbia County community. Local history enters school life just as directly: middle-school drama students have researched Dayton, written scripts and performed for the public, and the high-school building’s centennial brought alumni, artifacts and a student production about its namesake into the same space.
Dayton Elementary carries children through fifth grade, and Dayton Middle/High School becomes the shared secondary home from sixth grade to graduation. With only two school organizations, students remain in one recognizable system while gradually taking on subject courses, credits, athletics and leadership. The auditorium, greenhouse, athletic spaces and common areas serve both the school day and the wider town. Agriculture, performance and civic memory are woven into the ordinary route, supported by adults who continue to participate in school traditions long after their own graduation.
