170. Puyallup School District

Puyallup School District is organized around a broad neighborhood network across the growing valley and the traditional lands of the Puyallup Tribe. Elementary communities feed seven junior highs and three comprehensive high schools—Emerald Ridge, Puyallup and Rogers. Walker High School and Puyallup Digital Learning provide other secondary routes. Agricultural history, suburban development and reservation communities all sit inside the same regional system.

Native American Education has operated in the district since 1973. The program currently serves more than nine hundred students representing sixty-five tribes, bands or Native groups, with school advocates and a parent advisory structure supporting participation. Lushootseed language learning at Waller Road Elementary gives the local tribal language a place inside the regular school day.

Language education extends in several directions. Spanish dual language runs through sixth grade at Dessie Evans and Karshner and continues into seventh grade at Aylen Junior High. Zeiger Elementary offers an American Sign Language dual-language pathway, while Northwood supports Korean and Ukrainian language learning. The district also provides interpretation and translated communication for families across its schools.

These pathways run inside ordinary school communities and share their activities, arts and athletics. A child may carry Lushootseed, Spanish, ASL or another language across several years while joining neighborhood activities, arts and athletics; the three comprehensive high schools then bring many of those earlier communities together. Language becomes one long thread through a district whose students may begin in very different parts of the Puyallup Valley.
